Livingston Parish Libraries PrototypeCockfield Jackson designed and built four branch libraries for the Livingston Parish Library system. This included: Denham Springs–Walker Branch (18,400 sq. ft.), Albany–Springfield Branch (12,700 sq. ft.), Watson-Live Oak Branch (15,700 sq. ft.) and South Branch (9,200 sq. ft.).
The Library Board desired a prototypical architectural vocabulary and interior space organization with unique color schemes, furniture, and finishes for each of the four new libraries. Each facility is based on a central “great hall” circulation space and reading room. A crossing axis passes through the “great hall” with adult services on one end and youth services on the other end. The concept was carried through at each branch for continuity and to promote the unified image of the library system. These projects were a joint venture with Labarre Associates, of Denham Springs, Louisiana. |
Main BranchCockfield Jackson Architects, in a joint venture with Labarre Associates, designed this new 17,000 sq. ft. main library for the Livingston Parish Library system.
The main library design was unique in comparison to the recent new branch library projects within the system (also designed by Cockfield Jackson) in order to distinguish it as the main branch of the Livingston Parish Library system. The building entry sequence begins with a spacious entry lobby which accesses the public Meeting Room that seats 100, restrooms and entrance into the library space. The Periodical and Newspaper reading area features a vaulted ceiling and indirect lighting with exposed steel trusses, with a panoramic a view to the north into beautiful landscaped areas. The Children’s Area is identified by a playful entry portal, and is named Kid’s World. The Adult Area is accessed through an art display area, and is terminated by the Teen Areas which is named Teen Zone and identified with colorful, lighted signage overhead. The facility includes a Genealogy Room, a Computer Lab and private small group Study Rooms. |
Denham Springs-Walker Branch AdditionRecognizing the dynamic role of libraries in education and social engagement, the addition to the Denham Springs–Walker Library addresses the need for amenities aligned with users' growing lifestyles.
The simplicity of the building form, paired with a storefront window system, gives prominence to the programs housed within, capitalizing on the exposure of the north façade. A pre-engineered structural system with a single-sloped roof, allows for greater freedom and flexibility without the limitations of a traditional column grid. The 9,200 sq. ft. addition houses technological and creative amenities such as: an expansive computer lab, private small-group study rooms, a makerspace, and two large meeting rooms for hosting events and gatherings |
